Boy/Girl Bands and the Billion Songs The story behind the song Andreas Carlsson wrote the lyrics while sitting his Swedish driving test   drawing from a recent breakup. There's something  tting about writing a breakup anthem while trying to pass a practical exam. The better story is the rejection. The song was  rst o ered to 5ive, the British boyband, who turned it down  at. They were pivoting to rap and were afraid of competing with Eminem. According to Carlsson, one of the members called security and left straight for the airport. That lucky pass gave *NSYNC the song that would de ne them. Then there's the 2024 revival: Ryan Reynolds dancing the original choreography in a Deadpool suit during Deadpool & Wolverine sent the track back into the charts 24 years later. In March 2025, it crossed one billion streams on Spotify   exactly 25 years after release. Listen closely Pay attention to the opening: a rising string crescendo building dramatic tension, immediately broken by Justin Timberlake's nasal "Hey, hey". That  rst move establishes the whole tone   dramatic but playful, serious but accessible. Then follow the "Bye, bye, bye" chorus:  ve voices in unison, each "bye" rhythmically punched, turning a simple word into a hypnotic mantra. That's the reason this song has lived in the collective brain for twenty  ve years. 104

What it's about Perfect is a song about honesty as seduction. The narrator doesn't present himself as a knight in shining armor, doesn't promise forever, won't show up with  owers. What he o ers instead is simpler: not always, but tonight. And that stated limitation   disarming in its frankness   is the proposition. Harry Styles said in an interview: "Perfect is de nitely a love song, but it's quite a spontaneous love song. It's not a song about overthinking. It's kind of like, well, you know, 'This could be fun'". The chorus is built as a series of conditionals   if you like... if you like   turning seduction into a recognition game.
