From the Temptations in 1964 to BTS, from the Spice Girls to Blackpink, all the way to Huntr/x, the virtual band born from a Netflix animated film in 2024. At the top of everything, One Direction: six billion songs as a group, eleven as solo artists — the defining case of this volume and perhaps of the entire history of boy bands. But there's more: an analysis of the "solo streams" — the billion songs that former members produced as solo artists, often surpassing the numbers of the group itself — and a look at who's still missing: the notable absentees like Little Mix, the most credible candidates to enter the club in 2026, and the bands that could surprise in the years ahead. Boy/Girl Bands and the Billion Songs character after the directors heard her demos. She'd spent ten years in idol training at SM Entertainment starting at age 11, then studied at NYU. Before the  lm, she had co written songs for Red Velvet, TWICE, and Taeyeon. Republic Records released Golden as a single on July 4, 2025, after noticing "the explosion in streams during the soundtrack's second week." The song reached #1 on the Billboard Global 200 in over 30 countries, won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. A side note worth mentioning: there's an ongoing debate in the Korean fandom about whether Golden quali es as K pop, given that Huntr/x is a  ctional group not released through a Korean company. That debate   what is K pop?   is unresolvable. And the fact that it's being generated by a Net ix animated  lm's song may be the most extraordinary aspect of the whole phenomenon. Listen closely An unusual time signature: 3/4 instead of the 4/4 standard in contemporary K pop. That ternary meter gives the song an oscillating, almost cinematic quality that immediately sets it apart from anything else in the playlist. This isn't a club track   it's a stadium track, a collective moment, a  lm  nale. Notice the shift from Korean to English in the chorus   not a jarring break but a natural  ow, the two languages completing each other instead of competing. 116

Halsey · 2019 An experiment in ordinary happiness   from a group that had accustomed the world to something bigger. What it's about Boy With Luv is a declaration of love for small things   not the universe, not the stars, but the everyday details of the person you love: what they do in the morning, what they dream about, what they eat. A song about the tender curiosity you feel for someone when you're truly in love. It's also a conscious change of direction. BTS had trained their audience on tracks of epic scope, thematically dense, loaded with social messages. Boy With Luv is deliberately light, colorful, joyful. As RM put it: "We've moved from loving big things to loving small things". That choice is an act of artistic courage   trading grandeur for something more intimate. 117
