Boy/Girl Bands and the Billion Songs The Paradox of I Want It That Way In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released I Want It That Way. It instantly became one of the best selling singles in pop music history, dominating every chart, every radio station, and every teenager's bedroom across the Western world. There was only one problem: the lyrics make absolutely no sense. The verses and the chorus  at out contradict each other. The love story they are describing is logically incoherent; they  ip  op positions from one line to the next without any sensible narrative thread. The song's co writer, Max Martin (a literal deity of pop music, lest we forget!), has admitted in interviews that the lyrics were written in a rush and never corrected because the melody simply worked too well to mess with. Nearly two billion streams later, for a song with nonsensical lyrics, we get the most honest lesson I Want It That Way can teach us: in pop music, melody is king. It comes before text, before message, and before narrative logic. If a melody embeds itself in your brain and refuses to leave, the rest is practically irrelevant. The Backstreet Boys weren't hollow puppets; they had genuine vocal chops, tight harmonies, and a commanding stage presence. But I Want It That Way proves that pop, at its purest level, is a game of frequencies and immediate emotional triggers. The human brain responds long before the rational mind has time to analyze. In 2000, *NSYNC  red back with Bye Bye Bye, a track engineered around a simple, universal gesture: the farewell. Ironically, it was also the group's unwitting farewell to itself. By 2002, Justin Timberlake would launch a solo career that would rede ne 2000s 22
