Boy/Girl Bands and the Billion Songs The Working Definition After much re ection, and for the purposes of this project, I have arrived at the following de nition of a boy band or girl band: A pop group consisting of at least three members all singers and performers of the same gender whose primary role is vocal (singing, harmonies, choreography). They feature a highly curated image, target a predominantly teenage demographic, and possess a pop or R&B repertoire. The occasional use of instruments by any member does not alter this label, provided it remains secondary to the group's core identity. There are also some de ning elements, worth focusing on one by one, because they are an integral part of the criteria that determine whether a group is included in or excluded from this volume. Vocal Group vs. Instrumental Band. The core of a boy/girl band is the voice and the body. Members sing, dance, and move. Instrumental accompaniment is delegated to backing tracks or touring musicians, freeing the performers for choreographies that are essential to the show. If the stage layout is built around instruments, we are in a di erent territory entirely. Construction & Image. Most of these bands are born from an industrial process. Auditions, talent scouts, and producers assembling the puzzle. Think One Direction via The X Factor, or the Spice Girls responding to a newspaper ad. This isn t a value judgment it s just the architecture of the model. Each member often lls a speci c archetype: the pretty boy, the rebel, the shy one. The group operates as a system. 6
