From the Temptations in 1964 to BTS, from the Spice Girls to Blackpink, all the way to Huntr/x, the virtual band born from a Netflix animated film in 2024. At the top of everything, One Direction: six billion songs as a group, eleven as solo artists — the defining case of this volume and perhaps of the entire history of boy bands. But there's more: an analysis of the "solo streams" — the billion songs that former members produced as solo artists, often surpassing the numbers of the group itself — and a look at who's still missing: the notable absentees like Little Mix, the most credible candidates to enter the club in 2026, and the bands that could surprise in the years ahead. Boy/Girl Bands and the Billion Songs Littrell. Lineup Changes In 2006, Kevin Richardson left the group to focus on other professional projects. He rejoined in 2012, and the lineup has remained stable ever since. Activity 1993 present. The group remains fully active. Editorial Note I Want It That Way is one of the most famous songs in pop music history, and also one of the most ba ing: its lyrics make absolutely no logical sense, painting a contradictory and confusing love story. Yet, nearly two billion people have streamed it. It is a perfect paradox: pop music doesn t need to be rational to be profoundly powerful. The Backstreet Boys are still out there touring and working, thirty three years into their run. Next Billion Track? Beyond their landmark hit I Want It That Way, BSB boasts three tracks with over 500 million streams. In particular, I expect we will soon see their smash hit Everybody join the club. A driving, textbook dance pop anthem for the group, it currently stands at just over 800 million plays. 66
