The aeroplane

  • the aeroplane lands on its back wheels (no thumb)
  • the aeroplane is on the runway, the thumb must be in place and the elbow relaxed
  • the aeroplane brakes (the wrist goes up a little)

Notice that the elbow goes down first. As soon as the bow is on the string (the runway), make sure that the fingers are gripping the stick properly (the fingers are the wheels of the aeroplane). Practise taking off (exactly the opposite to landing).

The whistle (exercise for changing strings)

Changing strings with the right pressure and flexibility of the thumb and the fingers (the elbow must not move).
The teacher should explain that this exercise is about a train changing platforms (with the children actually whistling), and that many of them learn to whistle this way.
