The level crossing (bowing means)

The teacher holds his bow parallel to the strings and plays the level crossing game with the child.
This is an exercise to check if the bow is kept straight. Saying “do the tram lines” always works well.

Pull - Letting go

90% children take a long time to distinguish between an upbow and a downbow. Using an elastic band may help with this: it should be hooked round the bridge and the button. I have become convinced over the years that small children (4-6 years old) always start with an upbow because they feel that still want to be cuddled in their mother’s arms.

Getting to know when the bow is horizontal

Fix a little stick to the bridge with a clothes peg. This exercise can even be done in a group, walking around. To check that they are really perpendicular, the children look at each other through their bows held in front of their eyes.
