Antonio Mosca è nato a Cascinette d’Ivrea nel 1941. All’età di 8 anni incomincia i suoi studi musicali sotto la guida del M° Aldo Canzano, che
 gli insegna il solfeggio e a suonare la fisarmonica, strumento col quale intrattiene il pubblico durante le feste patronali nei vari paesi del Canavese.
 Si diploma in violoncello con Antonio Saltarelli e Giuseppe Selmi, successivamente si perfeziona a Colonia con Gaspar Cassadò. Dal 1964 viene assunto come I violoncello dell’Orchestra da Camera di Zurigo, dove conosce Lee Robert, una giovane violista americana che sposerà nel 1966. La famiglia Mosca si trasferisce a Torino, dove entrambi i coniugi sono invitati dalla Rai a far parte dell’Orchestra Sinfonica, Lee come II viola e Antonio come I violoncello. Dopo otto anni di Orchestra Sinfonica e un’intensa attività solistica nel territorio piemontese, ma anche all’estero, lasciano l’Orchestra per dedicarsi all’insegnamento. Antonio e Lee insegnano presso il Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” di Torino, e nello stesso tempo si dedicano all’educazione dei figli: Liana violino, Marco violoncello, Nicola violoncello e arpa; allo sviluppo della scuola Suzuki di Torino ed alla formazione di insegnanti. L’orchestra Suzuki di Torino, costituita da circa 30 bambini violinisti e violoncellisti di età tra i 6 e i 14 anni, per il livello musicale raggiunto e per la sua particolarità infatti è considerata la più giovane orchestra d’Europa; tiene tournée in Italia e all’estero e viene invitata più volte a suonare per il Santo Padre e per il Presidente della Repubblica. Nel 1998 a Ginevra inaugura la sessione dell’assemblea delle Nazioni Unite. Dopo questo memorabile concerto, l’orchestra diviene entità artistica e promozionale, riconosciuta dall’ILO-IPEC, per la campagna contro il lavoro minorile nelle sue peggiori forme. L’anno 2006 segna il momento del pensionamento dal Conservatorio con un buon risultato sul piano didattico; con 20 diplomati in violoncello, nell’arco dei 28 anni d’insegnamento.
 Il progetto Suzuki e la sua evoluzione in Italia, sarà l’impegno del dopo pensione, come anche la stesura di testi didattici rivolti all’insegnamento
 della musica e della pratica allo studio del violoncello e l’organizzazione di “Agrimusica” (collegio di musica) per ragazzi musicisti.

The child and the Cello

I have written this book for cello teachers and particularly those who want to know more about teaching the instrument to children.
 It is also intended for parents, and will make it easier for them to help their children during daily practise. Teachers of other string instruments, such as the violin will, I think, find it particularly interesting.
 I also hope to clear up some misconceptions about the Suzuki teaching method, wrongly considered to be superficial in its approach. Children that study with the Suzuki method are often considered “battery hens”. But a closer lookwill reveal the seriousness and excellence of its technical procedures.
 The Suzuki Method is similar to many others: it demonstrates that children can learn music in the same way as they learn a language, when they are very young, and that thinking only talented children can study music is a misconception. It also demonstrates that all human beings can learn a musical instrument, and that music is an important, indeed essential, life resource.
 Any teacher using this method will have to humble himself: the child he is to teach is not there to be dominated, but to be lead with great respect, in the way and in the time that suits him or her. The teacher will find, all things considered, that he has got more to learn than he ever imagined.
 This book is the result of my many years of experience as a teacher and includes the technical knowledge handed down to us as students, by great players, such as Antonio Saldarelli, Giuseppe Selmi and Gaspar Cassadò. I firmly believe that, irrespective of the teaching method used, whether teachers are good or not depends on the love they put into their work. So, with this in mind, I have decided to put pen to paper and pass on my own experience in this field.
