Saxofonista, flautista, compositore è nato a Roma nel 1953. Ha iniziato da autodidatta sia come strumentista che come compositore. Ha cominciato la sua carriera con l'improvvisazione in molti generi musicali e componendo musica. Nel 1982 si è diplomato in Saxofono presso il Conservatorio “L. Refice” di Frosinone sotto la guida di Baldo Maestri. Successivamente ha studiato composizione con Michele Dall’Ongaro presso la Scuola Popolare di Musica diTestaccio.
 Ha scritto diversi brani per strumento solista e per formazioni più grandi come: quartetto di sassofoni, trio d’archi, big band e banda d’ottoni con solisti improvvisatori ecc.
 È uno dei membri fondatori dell’Italian Instabile Orchestra. Tra le numerose collaborazioni ricordiamo Giancarlo Schiaffini, Giovanna Marini, Anthony Braxton, Demetrio Stratos, Misha Mengelberg, Bruno Tommaso, Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, Martin Joseph, ecc.
 È docente di saxofono presso il Conservatorio “Licinio Refice” di Frosinone.

 He teaches saxophone at “Licinio Refice” Frosinone’s Music Conservatoire.

Il tradizionale corso di sax, in uso nei conservatori italiani fino a pochi anni fa, prevedeva un percorso scandito da studi tecnico-melodici, troppo spesso solo tecnici, mirato a condurre l’allievo al superamento degli esami di 5° e 7° anno. In questo non si distingueva molto dai programmi per gli altri strumenti, anzi, salvo qualche rara eccezione, gli studi erano e sono tratti da metodi per oboe, clarinetto, talvolta violino, ecc.
 Con una sostanziale differenza: per questi strumenti gli studi sono propedeutici a una letteratura sette-ottocentesca, mentre il repertorio saxofonistico è quasi esclusivamente del ’900. Non abbiamo repertorio barocco, classico o romantico e possiamo solo contare su qualche trascrizione. Per altro, la musica che ha reso popolare il nostro strumento è il jazz, che fino a poco tempo fa non era riconosciuto come musica “colta” e quindi non si studiava in conservatorio.
 Oggi, in un conservatorio oramai trasformato in università, i libri di studi in uso si rivelano sempre più obsoleti e lontani da quello che è la musica suonata. Allo stesso tempo sono convinto che studiare su un libro o su un altro cambi poco e, alla fine, se si studia seriamente qualsiasi testo, va bene: i programmi sono come scatole vuote da riempire con il rapporto profondo ed esclusivo che corre tra insegnante e allievo.
 Ritengo che, in genere, sia dedicata poca attenzione alla espressività, si privilegia piuttosto un virtuosismo di stampo romantico. Questo approccio è oggi particolarmente limitativo in una società come la nostra, sempre più cosmopolita e con una sostanziale accettazione della presenza di culture non necessariamente riferibili all’eurocentrismo.
 Queste sono le motivazioni alla base del presente lavoro, per cui ho privilegiato tempi lenti ed espressivi.

 ---------------------------------------------------------- Until a few years ago, saxophone teaching in music conservatoires in Italy consisted of technical and melodic studies – with, too often, an unfortunate emphasis on the purely technical aspects of playing whose primary aim was to help students pass the 5th and 7th year exams.
 This method was similar to that for many other instrumental courses. The main difference being that the books used for teaching saxophone were, with a few exceptions, simply copies of studies written for other instruments such as the oboe, the clarinet or perhaps the violin.
 However, these studies were intended to prepare the student for the performance of 18th and 19th century music, whilst practically all music for the saxophone was written in the 20th century. Apart from a few transcriptions, there is no Baroque, Classical or Romantic repertoire for the saxophone.
 Furthermore, despite the fact that it was principally through jazz that the saxophone had become popular, jazz was not – until quite recently – deemed to be an art form worthy of study at the conservatoire.
 So, whilst conservatoires have now been updated to equal status with universities, the conservatoire’s teaching programmes are becoming increasingly obsolete and unrelated to music written specifically for the saxophone. Now, I do believe that this might not necessarily be a big issue because – in the end, when studied seriously – all material can bring benefits. After all, a conservatoire course is essentially an empty container whose contents are the development of the deep and special relationship that evolves between a teacher and their student.
 What I do believe to be a serious gap is the lack of material dedicated to musical expression, for the emphasis continues to be centred on a Romantic concept of virtuosity. Such an approach is especially limiting in a world which is increasingly cosmopolitan, with its growing awareness of non-eurocentric cultures.
 These considerations have been the inspiration for the present publication with its focus on slow and expressive tempi. Eugenio Colombo

Note dell autore Tutti i cinque brani sono tratti da composizioni pi  ampie, pensate per organici molto diversi. Il Primo studio deriva dalla 3a parte di Toxon («arco» in greco antico), una mia composizione di ampio respiro in quattro movimenti del 1994, ispirata alla descrizione dell arco di Ulisse che precede la strage dei Proci, scritta per tre voci femminili, sax, contrabbasso e batteria. Il Secondo studio   una riscrittura di Devi Durga (divinit  femminile dell induismo), un brano di una dozzina di anni fa, scritto originariamente per quartetto formato da sax soprano, piano, contrabbasso e batteria. Il Terzo studio   una rielaborazione di un brano per orchestra che ha avuto molti rimaneggiamenti e conseguentemente diversi titoli, ne ricordo due: Pera Palace Hotel e Topkapi, due luoghi simbolo di Istanbul. Il tempo di 10/8   un tipico ritmo turco. Alla base del Quarto studio c   Sabra. Nel lontanissimo 1986 partecipai a un concorso di composizione con questo brano. «Sabra»   un antica parola di origine semita, usata anche dagli arabi, che significa sostanzialmente «paziente», «tenace». «Sabra» sono cos  chiamati gli ebrei nati in Palestina e «sabra»   il fico d India: a modo loro tenaci entrambi. Il Quinto studio   basato su una scala di 5 suoni F# - G - B - C - D, derivata dal modo pelog di 7 suoni, una delle due scale principali della musica gamelan indonesiana. L ho utilizzato in diverse occasioni: per performance solistiche e per gruppi di ensemble di strumenti a fiato. Ringrazio la collega Giovanna Pazienza che mi ha spinto a vincere la pigrizia e a scrivere questi studi. Author s notes All five studies come from larger compositions for a variety of different ensembles. Primo studio (Study #1) is based on the 3rd part of my composition Toxon ( bow  in Ancient Greek). Toxon, written in 1994, was an extended piece in four movements for an ensemble of three female singers, sax, bass and drums and was inspired by the description in the Odyssey of the bow that Ulysses strung before slaughtering Penelope s suitors. Secondo studio (Study #2) is a rearrangement of Devi Durga (the Hindu goddess Mother of the Universe), written around twelve years ago for soprano sax, piano, bass and drums. Terzo studio (Study #3) was originally a composition for orchestra which has been subjected to a series of transformations and re-arrangements, each with a different title. Of these, Pera Palace Hotel and Topkapi   two symbolic locations in Istanbul   remain amongst the most significant. The 10/8 time signature is a rhythm often used in Turkish music. Quarto studio (Study #4) is based on Sabra, which I wrote back in 1986 for a composition competition.  Sabra  is a word of ancient Jewish origin, used in both Hebrew and Arabic for  patient  and  tenacious . And it is also the Hebrew word both for the prickly pear cactus as well as for Jews born in Israel, each in their own way a tenacious species. Quinto studio (Study #5) uses a 5-note scale   F# - G - B - C   D. This scale is derived from the pelog 7-note scale which is one of the two principal scales used in Indonesian Gamelan music. I have used this scale quite frequently for solo performances as well as for several compositions for wind ensembles. I thank my colleague Giovanna Pazienza who encouraged me to overcome laziness and to write these studies. 4
