Introduction In 1992, commissioned by two American musicians, Flavio Gatti composed A Little Thing of Light for sax and piano, a piece with clear references to the atmospheres of early 20th century French music. In 1993, the Kiver Ensemble commissioned to the author a saxophone quartet version. Flavio Gatti called it A Little Thing of Light II. He entrusted to the saxophonist, composer and arranger Igor Sciavolino from Turin the transcription of the piece and asked him to give it a "jazz" cut. Sciavolino added a central modal part: on an obstinate riff of the baritone sax, each of the other three saxes alternate in solo parts (written improvisations) accompanied by other saxes. The Kiver Ensemble performed A Little Thing of Light II at the Senigallia Contemporary Music Festival in the summer of 1993. You can listen to an excerpt of this performance recorded live on our website. In 1994 the Milanese harpist Elena Cosentino edited the version for sax and harp. Finally, in the same years Igor Sciavolino prepared another version for harp quartet derived from the version for sax quartet. Versions for duo sax and piano, sax and harp and saxophone quartet were published by Rugginenti Editore. For this new edition Igor Sciavolino has revised and corrected the score and the detached parts according to the changes made during the various performances and has taken care of a more efficient direct readability in the score for the performers.
