PREFACE This new book offers the reader an opportunity to get to know Barolo and its history through an updated and condensed version of the internationally award winning work The Mystique of Barolo by Maurizio Rosso and Chris Meier (Omega Edizioni, Torino 2000). These lines replace the original preface by the late Luigi Veronelli, who deserves a special mention. I met him in the 1960's for the first time and was fascinated by his poetic and imaginative style. He was a true lover of Barolo. I am only left with my memory of him as the great founder of food and wine journalism in Italy. Since then, many things have changed in our land: more vineyards have been planted, more wineries have been built and Barolo has reached unprecedented international acclaim. In the 1990's production grew to more than 10 million bottles per year and in the following decade it reached and even surpassed 12 million bottles. This new situation created the need for new management goals to lead Barolo out of its hiding place into the spotlight. What used to be an aristocratic wine for few Italian connoisseurs has become a leading international brand. Although Barolo is today a famous wine, it is not yet fully known and appreciated everywhere and there is room for new and original ideas to support its continuing achievements. Currently Barolo's success is due to single brand recognition, but in the future more individual energy should be devoted to its "collective mystique", which belongs to the Langhe, Piedmont and Italy as a whole. As I'm writing these lines I have just received the exceptional news that the vineyards of Barolo (toghether with those of Barbaresco and other wine districts in the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato) have received World Heritage Status from UNESCO "for OUV – Outstanding Universal Value", which not only provides global recognition for this region's culture, but also extraprotection for the environment. As you read the following pages do not forget to slowly sip a glass of this unique wine … Cheers! Gigi Rosso Senior Enologist and Barolo Producer in Castiglione Falletto
