A strategic hill once crossed by nobles and imperial soldiers, offering breathtaking views from Istria to the Julian Alps "I have two jobs: one that makes me a living and one that gives me a reason to live." These words by Massimo Cramer perfectly sum up what Baroni del Mestri represents for him and his family: a small agricultural estate, meticulously cared for, rich in history and elegance. The estate's four hectares of land overlook the southern slope of Mount Quarin — a hill (despite its name) that dominates Cormons and from which, on a clear day, one can take in both sea and mountains, from the Gulf of Istria to the Julian Alps. A family story The estate is deeply tied to the history of the Cramer family. It was purchased in 1971 by Massimo's parents, Giovanni and Grazia. The previous owner was none other than the sister of Carlo Michelstädter, the great philosopher from Gorizia who died tragically young in 1910 at just 23 years old. Massimo's father, an Istrian deeply in love with the land, bought the property not to produce wine but to create a peaceful and beautiful retreat for family weekends and holidays. "As a boy in Trieste, all my friends spent their holidays at the seaside, while I had to spend my summers on Mount Quarin," Cramer recalls. "Over time, however, my love for this place steadily grew, and now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else." For Massimo too, the estate is a buen retiro, a place to relax after a week of work in Trieste, where he lives and runs a construction company. © Massimo Crivellari Barbarian invasions, castles, and barons Mount Quarin bears the marks of a thousand-year history. Its strategic position — ideal for controlling the surrounding area — made it a crossroads for noble families, migrating peoples, and imperial soldiers. The remains of an ancient fortress can still be seen here, where the Patriarch of Aquileia took refuge in the 6th century AD when the fierce Avars devastated Central-Eastern Europe. Quarin maintained its military role as a lookout point until the First World War. In the 17th century, the hill was home to the Barons del Mestri, from whom the Cramer estate takes its name. Massimo is deeply passionate about history, especially that of "his" Quarin. During restoration works completed about twenty years ago, the original and splendid 17th-century loggia — built by Baron Luca del Mestri in 1651 — was rediscovered. Today, the loggia, whose ancient elegance has been preserved, is the space where Massimo welcomes his guests and from which one can enjoy a truly breathtaking panorama — ideally with a good glass of wine in hand.
