All Round DRESSING UP WINE BETWEEN SYMBOLS AND IDENTITY Marco Cucinotta This is the third instalment of our journey through the labels chosen by wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia in order to attract customers with colours and images, but also to tell a story I n the world of wine labels, it is sometimes the simplest details that tell surprisingly complex stories. We are often confronted with basic signs and symbols that might, at first glance, appear to be mere graphic choices but which, in fact, often end up harbouring deeper meanings: a family memory, communication strategies which were developed over time or were newly devised, references to places and landscapes that have helped to define a winery s identity. In such cases, the meanings intended to be conveyed by the label do not become immediately apparent. The symbol represents a distillation of a far more intricate narrative that is only fully revealed through the producer s lived experience and the tasting experience itself. This is precisely what happens at the wineries featured in this new chapter of Mangiavino s journey through the wine labels of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. 8
