THE CHIANTI DRINK We asked Andrea to tell us about the “Chianti drink.” When Paolo Desana was interned in the last camp (because he knew 12 internment camps!), the last one was an extermination camp, or rather of elimination; after four or five days, thanks to the arrival of the English, the camp was liberated, but Paolo, like others, was very ill (spotted typhus, pneumonia, etc., etc.). At that moment, someone magically pulled out a bottle of Chianti and offered him some; he drank as much as he could and then fainted. He remained in a coma for a few days, then woke up, gradually recovered, and within a few months returned home, with all the possible difficulties, since there was no organisation provided for the return of these men from Germany. In fact, his relatives and his fiancée took quite a while to recognise him... It was not easy to recognise a man with a target weight of approximately 90 kilos who, at that moment, weighed 43 kilos! In any case, Paolo attributed to that drink the ability to eliminate the bacilli he carried in his body (that science may not support this thesis, in this case, is a completely secondary fact...), but above all that wine had purified him of all the horror he had lived, giving him a second chance at life.
