A CONTEMPORARY ISSUE Let’s jump to the present. We are talking about one of the new initiatives that Andrea Desana cares about particularly: the creation of a ‘National Institute of Italian Sparkling Wines’ produced according to the Martinotti method (we will talk about it in a moment). An entity that would unify the activities of all the countless existing consortia, actions, promotions, related wine tourism, and the support they can receive. The various consortia linked to the different productions account for about 70% of the sparkling wines in circulation worldwide, with approximately 1 billion bottles produced annually. It would be enough to involve the Ministry of Agriculture, establish a support structure, secure a headquarters, engage dedicated operators, make investments, and, above all, get everyone to work together. Easy, right? This is where the classic Italian mentality of “me first” comes into play: always reluctant to join common initiatives, protective of individual interests even at the expense of the community's advantage, and prone to significant delays. Faced with such difficulty, Andrea cannot help but think of how much effort his father must have put into his institutional battles for the DOC.
