There are ever more numerous groups of enthusiasts all over the world who, through the rediscovery of historical dance, have experimented with a new way of approaching the culture of various eras and the meaning that the celebration takes on in the political and social context. Learning the dance heritage that goes from the Renaissance to the Regency era, recently rediscovered, stimulates curiosity to go further, toward an unusual and culturally stimulating living history experience.

The dance party, after all, is an iconic moment in many literary and cinematographic works, from Disney's Cinderella to the ball scene in the various versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet up to the costume dramas based on Jane Austen's novels and the fiction of as successful as Bridgerton.
This book is the result of thirty years of experience of the authors, founders of the "Il Contrapasso" of Salerno (Italy), a association accredited by the Ministry of Education for the Arts and Creativity Plan in the practice of historical dances. In addition to retracing the history of dance and its social function from its origins to the nineteenth century, this book offers factsheets, glossaries and multimedia tools that allow the reader to learn the steps and dance sequences from different eras and to recreate - on historical events or re-enactments – the spectacular atmosphere of court festivals and social balls of the past.
